What you’ll hear in this episode:

-Simple, yet powerful techniques to heal at home

-Taking back your power after trauma

-What is EMDR and how can it help you heal?

- How our kids behaviors can mirror our own unexpressed feelings and frustrations

-How acting out can relate to our own inner struggles

- The iceberg of behavior and how that relates to our children’s behavior and the way they channel their parents frustrations

- Resisting the urge to “fix”

- Understanding generational patterns

- The role of balancing chakras in your child’s behavior

-How claiming our authenticity and expressing our emotions can change how our kids express themselves through their behavior

What does Joyful Courage mean to you?

Well, in terms of this process of discovering channeling, it means to go forward with joy and courage, not guilt. Celebrate it, embrace it, as I talked about before, grab your partner, grab someone when your kid is having a fit and say “This is what I’m thinking and I’m thinking this and maybe this and I felt this” and try to go through all the different ideas that might be going on and depending on the relationship with your child, some parents choose to share this dynamic with their child and other parents don’t. It can be very powerful that if your child knows this is going on, they can, Arcata now can come to us after she’s knitting or reading a book on tape in her room and say, “I’m really mad out of nowhere, like I was completely happy, I love the book I’m listening to, something’s not right with dad, and will you call him and ask him what?” She’ll say, “I’m really mad or I really hate this” and she’s like, “and I don’t know why.”

So I would just say, it’s fun, it is fun, it’s a different kind of fun than a lot of people might be used to but it’s fascinating, it’s absolutely fascinating when you start taking this perspective. I mean, it’s hard for me to, I mean, I go out and talk to people, I’ll be at a cocktail party or something and someone’s kid, and I’ll say something and then I’m like, “Hmmmm” and I’ll watch the person’s reaction and I don’t think they’re very happy with something I’ve said and their kid will come up and start tugging at them and be like, “I want to go! I want to go right now! I want to leave!” I was right about that. It’s hard for me not to see once you wake up into this way of viewing the world it’s really quite fascinating. So, meet it with joyful courage.

Eps 131: How to use routines to shift the dynamics in your home

Join the Joyful Courage Tribe in our community Facebook group - Live and Love with Joyful Courage.  Raising our children while growing ourselves...

:::::

A solo show all about routines

There are a couple tools, that when put into place, make the whole parenting journey easier.  You have heard me talk about special time, that one on one time that is so important for building relationship and a solid foundation of belonging and significance for our kids.

Challenges coming up in the LLWJC group

IMG_0148.JPG
  • mornings, bedtimes, defiance, meltdowns, sibling issues

    • We find ourselves putting out fires

    • We find ourselves being overtaxed

    • We find ourselves slipping OUT of who we want to be and INTO crazy parent

    • This is also where we loose sight of the way that we are contributing to the chaos at hand….

      • We blame out kids

      • We fall into the trap of “it is always so difficult”

      • We forget that there is always a flow that comes after the ebb….

Yes, special time helps with the challenges mentioned about.

The relationship we nurture with our kids is what has the biggest impact on their behavior, absolutely.

AND, another tool that is super helpful to come back to, again and again, is co-creating routines.

Now, if you are someone with challenges in the morning, or after school, you may be thinking, but we have a routine, and it isn’t working!!!

GREAT.

Not all routines are created equal.

  • Routines are made to be modified and changed up

  • Routines designed to be HELPFUL for everyone will be the most USEFUL

Mindset matters

  • This is not about getting your kids to do what you want them to do

  • This is about helping your children feel like capable, contributing members of the family

  • This is about the process, the opportunity that exists inside the challenge that is currently at the surface

Take a deeper look…

  • Co creating routines means that you are CO CREATING

  • Find a time of day when everyone is feeling good, connected

  • Opening up the conversation to child about how they experience the challenging time of day, validate their feelings, listen and let them know you are taking their sharing to heart – this is not time to talk them out of what they are experiencing or getting them to “see your side”

  • Clear out the space through taking accountability for your behavior. This is really important.

  • Ask for their help to make that time of day easier/better for everyone

  • Brainstorm ideas/tasks

  • Offer/counter offer if you need to

  • Be open to their ideas

  • Be firm/not rigid around your non-negotiables

    • “This is what is important to me, how could we make that work?”

    • “What is your idea for that?”

  • Cross off anything that isn’t related/reasonable/respectful/helpful on the list

  • Work together to create a visual reminder

  • Try it for a week

But, but, but what if it doesn’t “work”

  • Shifting to what is “helpful”

  • Focus on the process

  • TRUST the process

  • Let the routine be the boss

  • Revisit at the end of the week and tweak if necessary

So many routines….

  • Housework

  • Family Meetings

  • Mornings

  • Afterschool

  • Bedtime

Take it slow – let go of urgency

How you show up matters

Be in your practice of curiosity and openness – catch yourself when you want to judge  (roshambo/coin flip) Currently in a new routine of turning screens off from 5-7.  This is a slippery place for us….

Recently posted a handout on the live and love page – will put it in the show notes – for walking through this process. Let me know if you have any questions!

Eps 129: Solo Show - Using the Iceberg Metaphor to Understand Behavior

Content:

Solo show today – from the car….  Thank you for having grace for my audio quality this week!! Feeling inspired to share with you on my way to yoga class.

All about the Iceberg Metaphor

hula square.png
  • Shout out to all the parents of teens out there who are showing up and sharing and willing to be vulnerable

  • Connecting seeing an iceberg as a metaphor for children’s behavior

  • Unwanted behavior is the “tip” of the iceberg

    • The behavior that we see

  • Under the surface -

    • What’s opening the door to the behavior?

      • Perception of connection

      • Perception of influence

      • Perception of mattering

      • Trauma/adversity

        • Kids are ALWAYS making meaning with their underdeveloped brain – and forming beliefs from that place

      • Lacking skills for navigating the challenges/emotions that show up

    • Moving from a place of strengthening relationship as a way to understand what is below the surface, to help us influence the behavior at the tip

    • Episode 104 on Making Amends

    • Always be moving towards nurturing relationship

  • What are some of the things YOU do to look under the surface? Head over to Live and Love with Joyful Courage and share!

Eps 123: Solo Show - Navigating Big Emotions From Grownups and Kids

SOLO SHOW

Context – we all have the power and the skills to be the parent we want to be

A recent post from the Live and Love with Joyful Courage community:

Can we talk about sharing our big feelings with our kids?

My kids are 2.5 and 4.5yo, and I don't know how to share my big feelings in front of them without freaking them out. I want to be able to be my full and authentic self with them, in an age appropriate way. And I realize, the fact that they are upset when I am upset means that they are afraid of my big feelings and may be afraid of their own big feelings. We try to welcome their big feelings (tantrums, disappointment, etc.) but I think we do a miserable job at it.

Compounding this, I am someone with explosive emotions. I tend to feel things very deeply and it takes me time to calm down. I have worked hard to make sure I don't express those emotions in a negative or scary way. But instead I most often bottle them up, which isn't good either.

Celebrating awareness. Celebrating emotional intelligence. Celebrating authenticity. Celebrating personal responsibility.

Misconceptions (in general):

Tree Headshot website.png
  • not ok for our children to see us upset

  • not ok for our children to FEEL upset

    • they’re being naughty

    • they’re manipulating

    • they’re learning “bad behavior”

  • welcoming big feelings is the same as condoning hurtful behavior

This is a POWERFUL example of what I think is the PURPOSE of parenting:

  • to grow into our best selves

Children are mirrors

  • not mimics

  • instead, provide a reflection of how we effect the world, what our impact is, what we are inviting

Children/parenting journey is an invitation

  • recognizing conditioning

  • recognizing what our “driver” is

  • recognize commitment vs attachment

    • Committed to being a connected parent vs attachment to what that looks like (slippery, perfectionism, comparison)

Children/parenting journey is unrelenting

  • The lessons come every day, moment to moment

  • The growth is like peeling an onion

  • There is no where to ARRIVE

Child/parenting journey is an opportunity to grow

  • I can’t say this enough

  • Where are your hard edges?

  • Where is there room for self growth?

  • Where can flexibility show up inside of rigidity

    • “I am someone with explosive emotions.”

    • We are ALWAYS evolving

      • What can we learn about ourselves?

      • What can we practice that will be more helpful and less hurtful?

      • How can we deliver our experiences and be heard?

      • How can we create a PRACTICE that honors us and our experience while also models the life skills we want our children to one day embody?

        • Practices are UNIQUE and INDIVIDUAL

        • The myth of “balance”

        • Assumptions about our “roles”

Taking care of ourselves and our own self-regulation, in the end, will do more to teach our children and influence their behavior than any tool you can find in a book or the internet.

You’ve got this!

Eps 110: Finding the Need Beneath the Behavior with Alison Smith

Meet Alison Smith, mother to two adorable kids, proud wife, former elementary school teacher  and now teacher coach, advocate and revolutionary in win/win parenting.  Like many of us Alison had visions of being the best, doing the best and really being that one adult that impacted her students lives powerfully.  As a self identified recovering perfectionist, Alison entered the teaching world and become a mother. It did not take long to identify that something in the work with children had to change. Fueled by her passion and her journey, Aliso identified a need for teachers to feel supported in their work.  In her coaching, teachers are inspired and supported to be the most authentic, joyful and wholehearted teacher they can be.

IN THIS EPISODE:

20264973_1676032889087243_8270723515284785436_n.jpg
  • Alison shares Bonnie Harris’ iceberg analogy and how it guides parents to identify the underlying root of a child’s behavior.

  • Like a medical issue, we often treat the symptom until the symptoms persist then we are forced to find the root cause.

  • Realizing that the child’s behavior that triggers us is the root cause of our reaction and inability to connect and show up best for the child.

  • Only when we dig into our roots and what is underneath our icebergs can we better guide our children through their own experiences.

  • Triggers can cause us to panic and ‘future trip’ into fear about our child’s behavior, enabling us into unhelpful methods.

  • Using our curiosity to dig to the root - is my child hungry, tired, overstimulated, cold, hot, uncomfortable, lonely?.

  • Once we identify our triggers we can move into the practice of showing up the way our kids need us to. We chose connection and enforcement that they matter.

  • Often we misjudge our kids motivation and intention leading to disconnection and an increase in the child’s mischief.

  • Once a parent gets it and truly understands the process begins within the parent first then the practice strengthens and the child, family and parent begin to thrive.

  • There is no one perfect general response to situations with your child.

  • Practicing prevention, in-the-moment and then repair strategies alleviate and get to the root of the issue.

  • An open conversation on how parenting is shifting from authoritarian to permissive. Why parents today need something to change and are willing to find the courage to revolutionize how the adult/child relationship evolves.

Eps 107: Casey is Solo and Homework is on Fire

Join the Joyful Courage Tribe in our community Facebook group - Live and Love with Joyful Courage.  Raising our children while growing ourselves...

:::::

Skills, skills skills! Mama Tanya shares with our community an incredible example of how meeting your child where they are at can shift the outcome of your experience. It is easy for us as parents to become presumptive about misguided behavior  Remember how curiosity is key? By becoming curious with our kids, we are able to recognize the skills they still need to develop, as well as see the reasons for certain choices, which are not always what they seem.

Mama Tanya shares:

“Sorry for the long post but I need some advice. “ school, and they gave him homework to do over the weekend. He said he didn't think it was fair to have homework on the weekends (which I agree), but on Saturday he set his homework on fire! Took the lighter when no one was watching, went outside like he was going to go play, and set it on fire burning half the page and dunking it in the pool.

When I found the half burned sheet of paper in the pool, I kept my cool but was obviously shocked that he would react that way to homework. I let him know that I thought it was a poor decision to 1. light something on fire (safety!) and 2. refuse to do his homework in such a permanent way. Internally I felt helpless and frantic to solve the problem, externally I let him know that I get it, homework sucks, and I reminded him that he could ask for help.

I asked him what made him set it on fire, was he feeling overwhelmed? Or angry? Or both?  He was visibly upset both about being caught and about homework so I didn't preach or press the issue until later that day. When he was calm I talked to him about how sometimes we have to do things we don't like (like washing dishes) but we can learn to do it anyway, it doesn't have to be perfect, and we can ask for help.

I also explained that between two extremes (setting homework on fire and staying up till midnight doing homework- neither which are healthy) he could find a happy medium. He said he had not done his best and that he would try to do his best this week. - I felt like it was handled positively all in all.

But, when he told his father and co-parent (who lives elsewhere) over the phone, his dad immediately started saying that he wasn't going to send him something previously promised, that he would take his computer and phone away if he ever did it again, and went into punishment mode.

So, what would you do? I thought about saying he couldn't do his electronic time until he completed his homework. Or I would give him extra electronic time every time he completed his homework. But I am super conflicted. I feel like homework issues should be dealt with by the teacher. Natural consequences. Of course I want to help the teacher, but not sure how...”

Bullet Point:

head with mic.png
  • How to approach the reasoning behind the behavior

  • Kids do more in response with how they feel

  • Getting off the emotional freight train

  • Getting curious so we can be solution minded, see where child has influence

  • Parents assume children make choices rationally, when in fact they have limited skills

  • Revisiting Dr. Siegel’s “Palm of the Hand” example

  • Assessing what else can be going on inside their body

  • How to identify lacking skills and helping kids deal with the discomfort

  • Letting go of our perspective as the only perspective

  • Letting go of “should” (ex. They should know better)

Help to spread the word!

The goal for this month is 15,000 downloads of the podcast! Talk to your friends and family about the show and the value you find in listening in - then encourage them to do the same! Increasing the numbers makes is more sustainable and allows me to continue to have these epic parenting conversations!

BONUS Eps: Parent Talk - Morning Mischief

It was so fun to have the chance to speak one on one with a listener about the challenges she is facing with your your son.

Listen in and notice how universal some of the feelings and thoughts are that you hear Stephanie speak into...

The parenting journey is a collective experience.  You are not alone!
