What does Joyful Courage mean to you?

Right, so I’m just getting started on human-ing, I’m 9 months into the journey, but man, it’s been a difficult road already. I’ve had so many opportunities to feel like a failure, to feel guilty and unsure and my goodness, so courage, I think about the willingness to continue to move forward and to continue to take responsibility for my own experiences and my joy so rather than making my son responsible for how I feel, that willingness to continue to look at my own stuff, and look at, “Okay, I’m reacting to my son right now but I think, actually, this has to do with something about me and am I willing to take a look at that for both of our sakes?”

And I don’t think that’s easy. I don’t think the road that I’ve chosen, to be willing to look at the hard stuff, that’s not easy but it’s the path that I’m choosing to go down. I think, as a result, your phrase, your brand, Joyful Courage totally speaks to me. I’m on a mission to find joy and I talk about joy a lot but I think that it takes courage to be willing to look at if I’m not experiencing joy, it probably has a lot more to do with me than it does anyone else around me and I don’t think having a son is going to make that any easier, right, this is another character in my story to get to bring things up for me to get to see that I couldn’t see because I’d never been in the context of a parent. I’m so grateful for him already, for being my teacher and I am brave enough to be willing to continue to travel this road and I’m grateful for friends like you to help me and remind me when I get stuck and need some support because it’s not easy but we have each other, right, and that’s what I’m trying to create with Personal Pep Talk. I don’t have all the answers but I can help love you through it if you’re going through it too.

What does Joyful Courage mean to you?

“It means living a life based in truth, and unfortunately, to live truthfully and to speak truthfully in this American culture is seen as something as so courageous and it really shouldn’t have to be lauded as a courageous act to be living as a real person. And unfortunately it gets so many applause, “Oh you’re so courageous to say that, oh you’re so courageous to do that, oh you’re so courageous to speak that” and it’s really just called being truthful.  And so joyful courage is really just living in our naturally truthful selves and because we’re short on truth right about now, even more so in our country then it lets us know we are living away from and in contradiction to our natural selves which our natural selves are truthful.

So if we’re just our natural selves, truthful is the way we operate. So, a joyfully courageous woman has just remembered who she is and shed the false, poisonous, faulty beliefs about who she is, which are really lies, and she’s just living in the natural beauty, power and influence that is consistent with her divine design.”

Eps 136: Kelly Bos talks about how NOT to become your child's inner critic

Join the Joyful Courage Tribe in our community Facebook group - Live and Love with Joyful Courage.  Raising our children while growing ourselves...

:::::

Today’s guest is Kelly Flannigan Bos, MSW. Kelly is a clinical therapist focusing on individual, marriage, and family relationships. She helps people find meaning and joy in their relationships - with themselves and others. As a well-known relationship expert, she has appeared in a professional capacity in countless media markets as a guest and writer. Today we are discussing an article she wrote in November called, “I don’t want to write the script for my child’s inner critic.” Join us!

“We’re not always going to have the perfect reactions and we can certainly apologize when we haven’t kept our cool or done the right thing. There’s ways to model other things like resolution or forgiveness.”

“Does a good brow beating make us feel better, more able to face the challenges ahead of us? Usually not. We often shame ourselves into inertia. Would we ever say these words to a friend? There is a better way. We can be kind to ourselves and get better results and I definitely want kind self talk for my kids."

“It’s a constant journey but it’s one I know I want to be on so I just keep starting again and if I can be self-compassionate to myself, then I have something to give outside as well.”

What you’ll hear in this episode:

AAIAAgDGAAAAAQAAAAAAAA0aAAAAJDE3YThiYjQ5LTgyZDYtNGFlYS1hOTBiLTQ0YzQyNWI0ODU0Zg.jpg
  • The role of self-compassion in parenting

  • The three tenets of self-compassion

  • Moving past the isolation of the shame of not meeting our own expectations

  • Over-identification with our problems and how mindfulness can make a difference

  • Worry and the reality of the lack of accuracy of our future prediction

  • Phases of parenting and worry

  • Brain development and parenting – developmental challenges

  • Getting out of the emotional whirlwind

  • The role of self-comfort, recognizing and acknowledging our own suffering

  • Self-compassion as a way to build capacity for parenting challenges

  • Self-compassion and it’s relationship to compassion we can extend to others

  • Self-compassion for avoiding depletion

  • Making self-compassion part of common language in the family

  • Family meetings as a vehicle for communicating self-compassion

  • Separating the child from the behavior

  • Problem solving to avoid over identification with problems

  • Fear as a barrier to positive parenting

  • Self care as self-compassion

  • What to do when you have no room for self-care

What does Joyful Courage mean to you?

I think this question is such a great one and it changes often a little bit depending on what we are talking about but I wanted to bring it back to a self-compassion idea. So, joyful courage, when we talk about it today, I’m thinking it really means being able to be loving to myself, even when I don’t feel very lovable, be loving to myself and find that sense of happiness and peace and joy. So being able to push on through things, to hold myself, and know that I’m going to get through this, and I can do something different tomorrow, or I can continue to do it this way, whatever it is, whatever the message needs to be, courageously give yourself that message and you push forward and you’re loving and kind, not judge yourself and finding that you’re a part of many, many people struggling today and you’re not the problem. You’re okay in this moment.

Eps 132: A conversation with Liz Haske about letting go of worry

Join the Joyful Courage Tribe in our community Facebook group - Live and Love with Joyful Courage.  Raising our children while growing ourselves...

:::::

Today’s guest is Liz Haske, a mother, an international teacher and instructional coach and children’s book author. She has over 15 years elementary classroom experience in six different countries and is super passionate about empowering children to be their most courageous selves.  Her first book, When Worry Takes Hold, was released in November 2017 and aims to help young children cope with worry by using mindful breathing. Join us!

“It’s about a young girl who’s afraid to do different things and she realizes that she has the power inside her and if she puts her hands on her belly, she can be brave.”

“Stories help us be better people if we are reading the right books”

“We want to empower these little people to realize they can do it. They can develop the tools and they can be confident and they can face what is presented to them in healthy and positive ways.”

“Worry gets bigger and bigger the more that we do it.”

“We can be brave, and everyone has worries … whether it’s helping our kids be brave or us being brave to face whatever parenting challenge it may be.”

“Courage is just a deep breath away.”

What you’ll hear in this episode:

·      The basis & inspiration for When Worry Takes Hold

Liz_Sit-01.jpg

·      Worry as a visitor and the power to ask it to leave

·      Acknowledging & expecting worry

·      Externalizing worry and setting limits

·      Following the why – getting to the root of big feelings

·      Manifestations and signs of worry

·      Addressing underlying worry vs. addressing the behaviors

·      Taking a wide view to problem solving worry

·      How not to take worry related behaviors personally

·      Why trying to talk kids out of their worries doesn’t work

·      Managing worry as a practice

·      Tools for managing worry and how they can be applied to other situations

·      Mindful breathing vs. “Let’s take some deep breaths”

·      The power of mindful breathing

·      How to know when to get professional help (duration, intensity, impact, age appropriateness)

·      Journaling worries to find patterns and icebergs

·      Liz’s upcoming projects on the horizon

·      The importance of exercising self-compassion

What does Joyful Courage mean to you?

I’m going to answer it in two parts. I’d say the first way, which is for me personally, is finally having the courage to do something I’ve been dreaming about for over ten years and the absolute joy of going through the learning process of taking an idea and turning it into something that kids can hold in their hands and hopefully read and become better because of it. So that is absolutely Joyful Courage.

But I think it’s also in the context of kids the feeling that they get when they face their fear and they realize how empowered they are. It might not be breathing is their strategy, but perhaps When Worry Takes Hold might be a book that just starts a conversation with them and an adult in their life that, “Yeah, you know what, I do get a bit worried. Let’s try this breathing thing.” And, “You know what? This breathing thing isn’t working for me.” But then, there’s now this opening for more tools to be introduced because it’s something that’s been brought to the surface.

The book ends with, “Courage is just a deep breath away.” I think that when children can realize this, they’re empowered. There’s really a pure sense of pride and joy in being brave and finding courage and so that’s kind of what it means to me.

Parenting from within takes practice practice practice. What are the significant tools we need to really delve within? Just like we are in constant practice it’s key to continue the conversation! Our children are not the only humans in development.

“Being a part of the Living Joyful Courage Membership Program has encouraged me to continue practicing to be parent and person that I want to be. I choose my experience to situations. There's no easy answer to fix my kids behavior… It is more about how I be with my kids that creates a good experience versus what I do to make them listen to me.

Since starting this practice I feel stronger connection with my kinds, I feel a shift in myself,  and I believe I am the perfect mom for my kids…

Other should consider program because the parenting journey is not easy, and it's an ongoing practice. The support and information Casey provides, with emails, webinars, and coaching calls is so beneficial, and she provides it in a way that is easy to understand and put directly in the practice I have also found there is so much value in a tribe of parents sharing experiences, willing to listen, and offering encouragement and it reminds me that I am not alone on this journey.”

Eps 11: Rachel Macy Stafford and living the Hands Free Life

“I am an ordinary person living in the same distracted culture that everyone else is living in…”

And that is exactly what is so inspiring about Rachel Macy Stafford.

She is an ordinary person whose work is making an extraordinary impact on parents from around the world.

Most of us found her through her blog, www.handsfreemama.com - her writing drew us in and touched our soul.  We also joined her Hands Free Revolution on Facebook, to be even more connected to her and the community space she has created.

Because there is something really special about this ordinary person.

I am thrilled to be interviewing her on the Joyful Courage Parenting Podcast. Honored that she was willing to take the time to talk to me and share her journey, her vulnerability and her wisdom.

Her new book, Hands Free Life: 9 habits for overcoming distraction, living better & loving more is full of nuggets that will bring you to your knees.

So, so good.  Listen in…

Meditative Parenting With Molly Knight Forde

FYI - there are a couple of swear words – show is marked “explicit”

Molly’s journey…

Kids are now 25, 21, 16 year old, some time as a single parent…  Survived psychological abuse and then self sabotage during child/teen years.

Moved to Paris to study classical piano.

Found a Zen Meditation Dojo which opened up new possibilities…

“Having the kids put a demand on me to take care of myself.”

“Meditation around noticing myself…  self observation…  Separate off so you can see you…  Aiming for moments of presence in anything I did – washing the dishes, reading to my kids, playing piano…  Those little moments became more frequent.”

I teach meditation…

Trying to have moments of presence where you develop an observer…  One method is to ask, “Am I in my body?” Can I talk to my kids and have awareness in my legs?  You start to develop an attention…  To remind ourselves to be present in the moment…

Our bodies go to what is familiar – our patterns become our instinctual reaction.

“The way we parent is a mirror of how we treat ourselves on the inside…”

Integrating with moments of presence will allow us to be much better parents.

WE DON’T HAVE TO BE PERFECT!

There is wisdom and information in your body – BEGIN TO NOTICE IT!

Use an external cue – a red car, for example – that you are going to set that reminds you “I need to be here now” the cue can come and remember “I am right here and I am aware of my awareness.”

This practice makes awareness show up more often when you are in the moment of difficulty.

E Squared – book

Step back and have some choice with our children…  and model that for them.

How to live consciously and know that things aren’t perfect – but that doesn’t mean I have to take it personally – I have empathy into their learning so I don’t have to be mad at them because they haven’t done something.

We all need to make mistakes to learn.

How do we teach this to our kids?

Is your child a thinker?  A mover?  A feeler?  Figure out where they are at and help them to develop/integrate the others in – we need them all to be balanced.

Questions for instagating this awareness in our kids:

-       How are you feeling?
-       How is your body experiencing this emotion?
-       If you could write down what you are saying to yourself, what would you write?

Bring light to their inner considerer – stuck in story about the future or the past…  get them to notice those kinds of thoughts.

Noticing more about themselves…  The more I do the work, then I don’t have to teach them anything because they are learning energetically…  They learn by example.

Being able to feel as opposed to thinking without feeling…

COMMON LANGUAGE!!

Breath is a body thing…  When our kids are worked up, asking them “Are you breathing?” is an invitation to awareness…

Walk the walk and talk the talk and they will pick it up…
