What does Joyful Courage mean to you?

“It means living a life based in truth, and unfortunately, to live truthfully and to speak truthfully in this American culture is seen as something as so courageous and it really shouldn’t have to be lauded as a courageous act to be living as a real person. And unfortunately it gets so many applause, “Oh you’re so courageous to say that, oh you’re so courageous to do that, oh you’re so courageous to speak that” and it’s really just called being truthful.  And so joyful courage is really just living in our naturally truthful selves and because we’re short on truth right about now, even more so in our country then it lets us know we are living away from and in contradiction to our natural selves which our natural selves are truthful.

So if we’re just our natural selves, truthful is the way we operate. So, a joyfully courageous woman has just remembered who she is and shed the false, poisonous, faulty beliefs about who she is, which are really lies, and she’s just living in the natural beauty, power and influence that is consistent with her divine design.”

What does Joyful Courage mean to you?

Part of the reason that I was so jazzed to be featured on this podcast is I love the idea of Joyful Courage. When I think about Joyful Courage, there's a part of me that's actually reminded of a dear friend of mine who died, not to get all dark and sad but she loved climbing mountains. She was 6 feet tall and basically all Amazon woman, and she would just take on everything with this zest for life, you know, in everything that she did, whether it was climbing mountains or trying to raise a puppy or doing stream samples, checking water, it was just with this absolute utter joy but she was also, she would take on these challenges with this, "Life is meant to be lived." And so she passed away actually in 2005, so it's been quite a long time, she was young, she was 23, she had not yet turned 24, it was the same year I got my yoga teacher training and I try to live my life with that spirit now, with the idea of this zest for life. That things are going to be hard, things are going to be challenging, but damn it, I'm going to climb that mountain because if I didn't, how would I feel? If I didn't what would my life really feel like to me? And so that's the thing that I try to teach my kids and it's really challenging sometimes to encourage them to climb mountains, my kids are five and not yet two, but I want to share with them, because my five year old has that in her, she has that unquenchable thirst for life and she is so joyful and I think of her when I think of Joyful Courage. I think of this idea that life is meant to be lived and it is not easy and there are challenges but those mountains are meant to be climbed, no matter what. And so I try to impart that to my kids even in the really mundane moments when we are sitting at home and watching tv instead of outside climbing a mountain but it's like, "What do you want to do? How do you want to live your life?" Joyful Courage, I think that is a beautiful vision of how I want to move through the world.

World traveler, calm seeker, mom coach, multi-lingual speaker, Alexander Hughes, brings us her methods for supporting mamas in the chaos that is parenthood. The trials and tribulations of her own experience in motherhood would eventually fuel the passion of support she gives to other moms navigating the same road.  Alex has created a soft space for mamas feeling out of control to find their rhythm and calm. At her website inneressencecoaching.com one has access to her workshops, authentic words of wisdom and that much needed place to connect with someone who gets it.  With three kids and a handful of international moves Alex knows what it means to feel out of control in the mama chaos – which is why she has turned over every rock to find that much needed calm. We really should just make her wear a cape.

  • Self Care – is about “doing stuff that lights you up”

  • Calm responding wisdom & tools

Quotes:

“When you have kids and you're a stay-at-home mom and you have stay-at-home parents, checking those boxes and feeling that sense of achievement doesn’t always happen”. 6:34

“Models and patterns live deep inside of me based on my own childhood and my own experiences”. 11:16

“Create a new best friend voice that is going to support us in the choices we are going to make”. 12:06

“If we can switch from that and seeing these mistakes, those blowups as opportunities to reconnect with your kid, teach your kid, learn yourself”. 20:28

“It’s your job to love yourself and to practice self care and self love because your children are watching you. AND you are a better everything when you do”. 43:04

What does Joyful Courage mean to you:

“I think that you need to be courageous to be a conscious mom, to practice positive parenting, or to take that journey toward calm responding. It’s about opening yourself up to feelings. It’s about treating those moments as learning opportunities when you do ‘make those mistakes’. When you open yourself up, you need to be courageous to be vulnerable. Once you do that it opens up this space for connection, which without there would be no joy”.

Today’s guest is Jenna Phillips Ballard, a certified personal trainer and life coach for celebrities, previously featured on Dr. Phil and The Doctors. She is on a mission to motivate and inspire leaders to make the world a better place through self-love.

After waking up from a coma in the year 2000, she recovered from brain damage and learned about the power of self-love. Her commitment to recovery depended on how she felt about herself and she realized her purpose was to inspire others to break through their limiting beliefs and create an unforgettable life.

She cofounded Ascension Leadership Academy with her husband and together they have coached hundreds of people into their greatness. She’s also the founder of Unicorn University, an online membership community where women never spend another day of being beige, broken or behaved.

We are discussing emotional intelligence – reframing the stories we tell about the experiences in our life and engaging with our children. Join us!

“I believe that being a parent, being a mom or a dad or a parental figure is the most important job in the entire world because of our world, our planet depends upon how our children today are going to take on that responsibility when they become adults. It’s incredibly important that people get the opportunity to look at their life through a different lens. You can’t change the past, but you can absolutely change the story you tell about your past and that’s how you can re-write history”

·      Finding the lesson, learning and opportunity in parenting struggles

·      How Fear limits mindset and fulfillment

·      Managing Fear and operating in its presence

·      Reframing typical mom complaints as invitations to conversation

·      Reframing as a practice, shifting your mindset around abundance and asking for support to stretch your plate

·      How to get out of your own way

What does Joyful Courage mean to you?

Joyful courage means finding the joy and the bliss in any specific circumstance, situation, no matter how scared out of your mind that you are – it’s being courageous, staying in the heart anyways, going for it anyway, because joy is a choice. You get to choose joy.

Eps 87: Lisa Fuller is on Supporting us With Shame Resilience

Today’s guest is Lisa Fuller.  Lisa Fuller, M.S.W., Certified Positive Discipline Trainer, Certified Professional Coach and a Certified Daring Way™ Facilitator, has been working with parents since 2005 to help them find joy and moment of peace even in the midst of chaos. She believes the world is a better place when we—adults and children—strive to treat each other with respect and love.

Today we are talking about developing shame resilience.

“Shame is something that we all have. It’s universal. Every human being experiences shame – those who don’t usually have some significant problems. It’s not a bad thing. That’s one good thing about shame – it means you are a caring human being.”

  • How to connect without trying to fix

  • Empathy and shame – how to support when you can’t relate to the experience

  • Cultivating relationships that allow us to speak to our shame

  • How to show up in your relationships that shows you are a safe place to talk shame

  • Doing vs Being – their roles in building shame resilience

  • Personal practices for finding joy within instead of looking to our children to complete us

What does Joyful Courage mean to you?

Taking risks with heart. The courage is taking the risks and moving ahead and doing it but doing it with your full being. The last couple years I’ve had some very significant deaths in my life and I think in so many ways it’s been a gift – it does highlight joy, the simple joy of being alive and how I’m able to be more grateful that I have this gift of life which isn’t going to last forever. Losing people who are close to us that’s the upside is that we go “Wow, this is temporary, this life, it really is.” I think when we get caught in the swirl of parenting we can ‘beam in’ – these other, bigger issues help us beam out. Joy helps with shame and getting perspective.

  • The importance of facilitating communication between parents and children during the other parent’s parenting times

What does Joyful Courage mean to you?

To take each day as it comes and look for what’s right about it not what’s wrong with it and to not be afraid of risk – I’ve never been a good risk taker but as a single mom I learned I have to take some. As someone who now travels the world teaching positive discipline I’ve gotten comfortable with getting on planes and flying off to Egypt by myself when I don’t know anybody there and some of the greatest joy and blessings of my life have been when I found the joy and courage to take an appropriate risk. You don’t have to fly to China or Egypt to do that. You can do it right in your own backyard. Certainly the single parents who are listening know that life can be risky on a pretty regular basis and being able to embrace that and learn the skills you need to be able to do that well will bring you joy in your kids, joy in your grandparents and joy in your own life. At the end of it, my son goes off into the horizon and I’m left with my life and what I make of it and I’m trying to do something with my life that I can be proud of and that’s what joyful courage means to me. It’s taken me all of these 60 years to figure that out.

What does Joyful Courage mean to you?

The fun in being courageous is getting on that super big rollercoaster. It’s not just about death defying acts of meeting demons. It’s really fun to be courageous because it brings amazing results. Connecting those two words is so important because it takes courage to be joyful and how amazing is courage when it has joy in it. It means to be inspired.

Eps 77: Carrie Anne Killeen talks about parenting for our soul

Carrie Anne Killeen is a Conscious Parent coach who specializes in assisting parents in increasing peace, love, joy, grace and ease in the home.  After living 20 years with a very critical view of herself and those around her, she realized how much love had been missing from her own childhood.  Using her children as her biggest teachers, she learned how to heal her own childhood wounds with love, compassion, forgiveness and inner truth.  She is deeply dedicated to creating a more peaceful world for children and parents. Carrie Anne inspires parents to see beyond their children’s behaviors to see the hidden truth and wisdom that lies inside their heart and soul.  Carrie Anne is a peaceful, single mom of three amazing and highly soulful daughters.  She is currently living her heart’s dream in Massachusetts.

What you’ll hear in this episode:

•    Working through emotional triggers with forgiveness and loving your inner child.
•    The need to exercising self-compassion as you process emotions
•    Emotional purging in a conscious way to move to an easier parenting journey
•    Moving passed mindfulness and consciousness to peacefulness
•    Functioning as a peaceful human being
•    Moving from “doing” to “being”
•    The value of peaceful presence, free of emotional trigger, for your kids
•    Modelling ownership of behavior for your kids
•    Peacefulness as a practice that takes time
•    Parenting as an extension of nature: gradually forging new pathways in your relationships and being expansive, not staying “stuck”
•    The healing power of authenticity with your kids
•    Aiming for perseverance and presence, not perfection
•    Exercising compassion for others and recognizing we don’t know their struggles
•    Learning how not to try to control others and focus on self to remain peaceful
•    Journalling as a practice to release emotions
•    Finding opportunities for stillness
•    Releasing others from the responsibility for reading your mind
•    Shifting to a solution focus to create momentum
•    Fear: being curious about it to avoid being driven by it
•    Showing up in your own home to make a difference in the world
•    Practical ways to nourish yourself
•    Unconditional love – what does that look like?

What does Joyful Courage mean to you?

Joyful to me is about being present in the moment, choosing to look on the positive side of it. To that actually takes courage. We have a lot of stuff that we have to overcome to be joyful, more joyful. Courage is such an amazing word. I think people have a lot of courage but I don’t think people really know how much courage they can have. To harmonize both of them, and what I feel in your community, is that you can have both of them and be in balance and that’s a beautiful recipe for having a successful and happy life which I feel is available for everybody.

Eps 54: Deborah Reber from TILT Parenting Talks About Supporting Differently Wired Kids

Welcome! My guest today is Debbie Reber, the founder of TiLT Parenting, an online destination and podcast. The website was the result of parenting a “differently-wired” child with neurological differences. She found it hard to find information and support for the challenges that parents face when ADHD, autism, and dyslexia are the diagnoses. Her family moved from Seattle to Amsterdam three years ago, where she homeschools Asher today. Debbie’s desire was to create a community and a podcast to give parental support and to help kids feel accepted, understood, and heard. Let’s learn more together!

What you’ll hear in this episode:

  • Preschool experiences: disruptive behavior and meltdowns

  • Year-by- year education plan

  • Assumptions that others make about ADHD, ODD

  • Challenges of living in Amsterdam

  • The Tilt Parenting Manifesto, based on true acceptance

  • Atypical kids are everywhere—at least 20% of the population

  • Why we don’t need the Shroud of Secrecy

  • Ten Tilts to Shift the Game

  • Amazing response from other parents

  • The Vision? Shifting the whole parenting paradigm

  • When options are limited for “normal” activities, like camp

  • When normal strategies don’t work

  • The benchmark mentality—usually by age 6

  • Using resources

  • Become fluent in your child’s language

  • The problem-solving approach, and tweaking and tweaking and tweaking

  • Joy in the growth of the child

  • Self-care for parents is important!

  • Asher joins in on the podcast for special episodes!

What does “joyful courage” mean to you?

“Having peace and joy is something I want parents to have in their experience. It takes a lot of courage to show up and be vulnerable in your relationship with your child and to lean into it. Embrace what is and notice the little things that bring peace and happiness.”

Eps 15: Krista Petty Raimer and the Self Care Challenge

How much do I love this week's guest????

TRUCK LOADS!

She is my friend and teacher, she inspires and coaches people all over the planet, AND she has taken time to sit down and puzzle out the self care challenges that SO MANY parents face.

I know you know what I'm talking about because you share it with me all the time - there is no time to take care of myself... I feel guilty...  time for me is at the bottom of the list....

I am telling you - not only have I HEARD it all, I have also EXPERIENCED all of these limiting thoughts and beliefs and allowed them to keep me from engaging in what is one of the most important pieces of parenting - SELF CARE.

You will love the conversation I had with Krista.  Listen in and let me know what you think!!!

You won't be able to get enough of her!!

Eps 12: NO YELLING! with Andy Smithson

I am really excited to have Andy Smithson, of TRU Parenting, back on the podcast!  He was my very first guest and a parent educator that I have been following for a while now.

There are a lot of things I like about Andy, I think it is so refreshing to have a Dad's voice speaking into the parenting experience.  His blog posts and articles are always so helpful and full of tips and tools that can be put into action right away.  He has lots of kids so I KNOW he is in the practice of walking his talk, and that always scores a lot of points with me...

Today we are talking about yelling.  Ugh.  Yelling is the worst - it makes our kids feel bad and it leaves US feeling bad and so unskilled.  Andy has an ecourse that is starting the beginning of October...  I have so much faith in this program that I am an affiliate of the program (meaning: I get a kickback when you sign up through me).

So listen up and soak in the zen vibes of Andy Smithson.

Meditative Parenting With Molly Knight Forde

FYI - there are a couple of swear words – show is marked “explicit”

Molly’s journey…

Kids are now 25, 21, 16 year old, some time as a single parent…  Survived psychological abuse and then self sabotage during child/teen years.

Moved to Paris to study classical piano.

Found a Zen Meditation Dojo which opened up new possibilities…

“Having the kids put a demand on me to take care of myself.”

“Meditation around noticing myself…  self observation…  Separate off so you can see you…  Aiming for moments of presence in anything I did – washing the dishes, reading to my kids, playing piano…  Those little moments became more frequent.”

I teach meditation…

Trying to have moments of presence where you develop an observer…  One method is to ask, “Am I in my body?” Can I talk to my kids and have awareness in my legs?  You start to develop an attention…  To remind ourselves to be present in the moment…

Our bodies go to what is familiar – our patterns become our instinctual reaction.

“The way we parent is a mirror of how we treat ourselves on the inside…”

Integrating with moments of presence will allow us to be much better parents.

WE DON’T HAVE TO BE PERFECT!

There is wisdom and information in your body – BEGIN TO NOTICE IT!

Use an external cue – a red car, for example – that you are going to set that reminds you “I need to be here now” the cue can come and remember “I am right here and I am aware of my awareness.”

This practice makes awareness show up more often when you are in the moment of difficulty.

E Squared – book

Step back and have some choice with our children…  and model that for them.

How to live consciously and know that things aren’t perfect – but that doesn’t mean I have to take it personally – I have empathy into their learning so I don’t have to be mad at them because they haven’t done something.

We all need to make mistakes to learn.

How do we teach this to our kids?

Is your child a thinker?  A mover?  A feeler?  Figure out where they are at and help them to develop/integrate the others in – we need them all to be balanced.

Questions for instagating this awareness in our kids:

-       How are you feeling?
-       How is your body experiencing this emotion?
-       If you could write down what you are saying to yourself, what would you write?

Bring light to their inner considerer – stuck in story about the future or the past…  get them to notice those kinds of thoughts.

Noticing more about themselves…  The more I do the work, then I don’t have to teach them anything because they are learning energetically…  They learn by example.

Being able to feel as opposed to thinking without feeling…

COMMON LANGUAGE!!

Breath is a body thing…  When our kids are worked up, asking them “Are you breathing?” is an invitation to awareness…

Walk the walk and talk the talk and they will pick it up…
