Isn’t it fitting that I waited until September to bring this into the conversation?
Resiliency has actually been with us since the beginning, on the outskirts, just out of the limelight. Those of you who have been with me since January have actually been practicing resiliency all along – every time you choose into intention, every day that you declare new ways of being, every time you follow through with what you say you’re going to do.
And your children have been practicing resiliency for a really long time too – I mean, they are all able to walk on two feet, right? They are learning language, climbing to the top of the slide, dealing with disappointment. They are learning to ride bikes and skateboards, learning to read and add numbers. They are navigating the nuances of the child social scene --- they are IN THE PRACTICE of developing resiliency.
According to Webster’s Dictionary, resiliency is the ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change.
I think the “easily” part is a life long goal.
The ability to recover or adjust. What else lives inside of resiliency? Flexibility, perspective, possibility…
So much of what we have covered this year is a nod to resiliency. When humans feel a healthy sense of belonging and significance, their ability to recover increases. Same for when they feel encouraged, part of the solution, and in contribution. When we choose to study and implement Positive Discipline parenting, we are teaching, modeling and practicing resiliency.
This month we are going to look at resiliency both as something we get to offer our children, as well as something we adults are being invited into continuing to develop. All within this current time of transition and stepping into something new. So glad we are journey-ing together!
