Eps 138: Peaceful Parenting our Teens and Tweens with Genevieve Simperingham

Join the Joyful Courage Tribe in our community Facebook group - Live and Love with Joyful Courage.  Raising our children while growing ourselves...

:::::

Today’s guest is Genevieve Simperingham, a counsellor, an AWARE parenting educator, a writer, a group facilitator, meditation teacher and founder of the Peaceful Parent Institute in New Zealand. Over the last 24 years, Genevieve has presented hundreds of workshops and courses. She has parented her own kids using attachment principles and she seeks to empower parents with the tools that result in increased harmony, trust and cooperation in the family unit. We are discussing peaceful parenting our teenagers. Join us!

“It’s about bringing into your parenting not just how you should respond in this situation or in that situation and our different approaches and techniques (which are really, really important) but it’s all about who we are as a person and who our child is as a person and the dynamic and the energy between us.”

“We shouldn’t be in fighter stance simply because we have teenagers.”

What you’ll hear in this episode:

unnamed.jpg
  • What is peaceful parenting and how it is different than some of the more mainstream behaviorist parenting approaches.

  • The Centre, Connect, Communicate approach

  • Stress management, self care and healing trauma and how they relate to parenting

  • The need for authenticity in empathy and curiosity

  • The biggest hangups for parents around peaceful parenting teenagers

  • Having tough conversations with your teens without shorting out the connection at the outset

  • Setting and holding limits within the peaceful parenting framework

  • Sex, drugs and alcohol use in teens - is it better to allow at home or to restrict?

  • Reducing power struggles and rebellion

  • Educating and empowering teens to make their own choices

  • Reconnecting to move past conflict

What does Joyful Courage mean to you?

Joyful courage to me, it connects me with that last bit that we were just talking about, to me it’s about joy we feel in the heart and it takes a lot of courage to reconnect. So to me it’s about opening the heart and allowing the joy, the enjoyment of the relationship, of the connection to come back in and that takes courage. It takes courage to be vulnerable again. It’s easier to be hard and defensive and stern and it takes courage to open the heart come back to the joy of that beautiful connection again.

Eps 116: Mindful Mamas, Shannon and Ashley are on Talking About the Power of Community

My guests today are Shannon Kinney-Duh, creator of A Free Spirit Life, and Ashley Walburn, owner of Home Holistic, and the founders of The Mindful Mama Movement – a podcast, community that empowers mamas, encourages authentic living and celebrates what it means to live an inspired life.

Shannon and Ashley bring women from around the world, in all stages of motherhood, on a journey of learning how to trust ourselves, how to listen to their intuition, how to let go and forgive, and how to embrace imperfection in the mess of life. They inspire others to practice mothering from a place of presence, creativity, humor and wisdom.

-----

Content:

  • The birth of the Mindful Mama Movement Podcast

  • The power of trusting our gut is the work of parenting

  • Popular opinion vs turning inward towards our intuition

  • Inspiring women to trust themselves and reconnect to their own intuition

  • Moving from survival to space in our life to enjoy it

  • We are good at the head stuff by dropping into our heart is a powerful way to shift into being with our family

  • HAHA!! Interrupted by the birth of a baby J ((real life people))

  • Woohooo – Ashley shares the birth story that interrupted our show

  • Creating communities for mamas

  • Going to yoga class and staying for connection with other mamas

  • Who are you? How are you? Inviting community to be together and real

  • Being part of community allows us to discover our own value and wisdom

  • Online communities can be places of powerful discovery, allowing for thought time and the possibility of going deeper

  • Themes that show up in groups – “Am I doing it right?” “Am I okay?” “Is this normal?” “What am I outside of mom?” “How do I find balance and flow while being a good mom?”

  • Exploring our roles

  • People are seeking to be real

  • We are better mamas when we nurture all parts of us

  • Theme that shows up with mamas is desire for simplicity – declutter, let go, surrender

  • Jaws theme music is not helpful!!

-----

What does Joyful Courage mean to you:

Ashley: Joyful courage, I think for me… The biggest part of what I do, whether it is at  a birth or meeting one on one with mothers, is really just finding your power and stepping into your own strength, not giving a shit, anything, a thought about what anyone else thinks – what do I really want? What does my baby really want? And go from my soul… I know this is right, and when I feel grounded and feel like myself, then I make decisions that are mine.  When I feel like myself, then I feel braver to do everything. And it gives my kids permission to do the same.

Shannon: Ditto that, and adding having a playful, just making sure we are really following our heart, our instinct, and looking at taking risks with a sense of adventure – that is how I see my daily life – look at this without the jaws music, stay curios, stay playful and light -  not always that way - we are so dang serious about this parenting stuff! I just want to look at taking risks and being brave with a sense of adventure, that’s joyful courage.

From Maren - “Being confident in who you are – that takes work, takes work to understand and realize who I am is good. That’s the courageous parent – the joyful part is finding joy in the processes of everything. This is a process, it isn’t perfect – if you can find joy in that you will find joy in so many things.”

Eps 103: Solo Show Digging Under the Surface of Bedtime Challenges

Join the Joyful Courage Tribe in our community Facebook group - Live and Love with Joyful Courage.  Raising our children while growing ourselves...

:::::

Who needs sleep? If you think about your best parenting moments vs. your more challenging ones I think we could venture to say that sleep OR lack of sleep would be a BIG contender.  We have all been there. We move fluidly through that familiar bedtime routine, finish that last Llama Llama page, kisses, lights out….. We are no further from the kitchen when we hear “Mooooooooooom”!!! or Daaaaaaadddddeeeeeeeeeeee”! Sigh.

Mama Christine posted this week about her daughter’s sleep struggles “oh, tribe, apologies for the long post, but I'm in dire need of some help. bedtime. dear lord, my daughter is 5, and it. is. brutal. her bedroom is on the first floor, mine is upstairs. she's often hungry before bedtime, so we usually do a snack like high fat yogurt and fruit. after bedtime jobs are done, i read to her, we sing, and say our goodnights...generally 20ish minutes. nearly every night, she's out of bed for any number of 'reasons': need to say goodnight to the dog, still hungry, thirsty, needs to say something to me, needs to ask me a question, needs another hug, says she can't sleep (within minutes of me leaving her bedroom) and the list goes on”.

Christine is not alone here, otherwise there would not be a book called Go the F@ck to Sleep . Let’s break this struggle down, so Christine can get some sleep and her little one can feel peaceful slumber.

What you will hear:

·      Iceberg view – top of the iceberg; requests, getting our of bed, one last… Under the surface; belonging and significance, influence, connection

·      Mischief showing up when we have misguided ideas about belonging and significance

103 headshot.png

·      Getting curious, noticing lack of skills to complete task (ie going to sleep)

·      Getting curious so we can be solution minded, see where child has influence

·      Children long for connection, they settle for attention

·      Creating routines that help kids know what is happening and allowing them to have influence

·      Making agreements to help kids create boundaries

·      What is my child’s perspective?

·      Asking how am I feeding this problem?

Eps 48: Taming the Toddlers and Haters with Julietta Skoog

Welcome! My guest today is a dear friend, Julietta Skoog, who is a positive discipline trainer. She joined us as a guest on Episode 4 about Family Meetings. It’s hard to believe that we’re here at Episode 48 now! I’m so thrilled to have Julietta back again so that we can all benefit from her wealth of parenting knowledge. She teaches many classes and workshops for parents, in addition to being a school counselor and psychologist in Seattle, where she works with hundreds of students. Her most important parenting work, however, is at home with her children, ages 4 and 7. Today’s topic is all about Toddlers—raising them and dealing with those around us who might not agree with our parenting methods. Join us!

What you’ll hear in this episode:

  • Toddlers are biologically driven to explore the world through visual learning and touch.

  • We need to find a way to bridge between our world and their world.

  • They need to know that you hear them and understand them.

  • Connect with them, see them, and hear them.

  • With 2-3 year olds, redirection and distraction can be effective tools to move them on to what they need to do next.

  • What it means to “get them to the second location”

  • With older toddlers, use curiosity questions and give them a wait time.

  • With younger toddlers, limit their choices to ones that you’re ok with.

  • Mutual respect is essential—even with toddlers!

  • Help them get excited about the next step with PLAY.

  • Use deep firmness and structure.

  • How should we handle destructive behaviors?

    • Speak consistently

    • Model connection and firmness

    • Supervise!

  • Model and help them learn empathy

  • Transitions cause anxiety for kids, so do your prevention work!

In dealing with others’ opinions, remember that we’re all challenged as parents; we’re all doing the best we can with the tools we have.

Eps 10: Ending Entitlement with Amy McCready

Amy McCready on the Podcast – woop woop!!!

Amy McCready is a Parent Education MACHINE!  She has an amazingly popular Facebook community, and offers so many

Inspired by the work of Alfred Adler…

“The biggest difference comes when we change ourselves.”

Certified in Positive Discipline

Shout out to the recovering yellers!!

“...I love working with parenting and helping them bring out the best in themselves.”

Adlerian theory- strategies are based on respect, respect for the child and respect for the parent…  All human being have a hardwired need for belonging and significance.  We need to feel connected – to family, classroom, community.  I need to make a difference, feel like I matter…

Behavior is goal directed – always take it back to the child’s sense of belonging and/or significance..  Getting to the bottom of this is what lasts long term.  Get below the surface!

Connection without Entitlement??

It’s messy….

The book begins with Mind, Body, Soul Time…  Spending one on one time and attention with your kids, where you are fully present, mind, body and soul.  You are fully present. Can be 10 or 15 minutes – this contributes “buckets” to belonging and significance to our kids.  Powerful opportunity for connection.

Create an environment that allows kids to learn that their actions and choices have outcomes - some positive,  some negative.  Entitled kids aren’t connected to outcomes.

Focus on - What went wrong?  What can we do different next time?

Natural Vs Logical Consequences…

“Solutions are always consequences, consequences are not always solutions.”
-       Jody McVittie

They’re not helpless!! Take a step back – what are you currently doing for your kids that they are perfectly capable about doing for themselves?

There is a balance between helping each other out and when you are consistently doing things for them that they could be doing themselves…  Back off, little by little.

Biggest mistake that is feeding into the entitlement epidemic? Smoothing their way --- smoothing out all their potential obstacles to keep out kids from experiencing discomfort.  Does not give them the opportunity to develop resiliency.

What is a baby step for creating change for parents who recognize their have been contributing to the entitlement of their kids?  Shift responsibility for one or two things….
